Yarmouth — 14 August 2026

What we said before each race, and what won. Published that morning at 8am and never edited.

6 races · we bet 0 · we named the winner in 2

14:03 "Confined" Novice Stakes (For Horses Which Have Run No More Than Twice) (GBB Race)

We named the winner

Class 4 · 1m3y · Good To Firm · 2 ran

We passed. Likely winner: Matins (1/50)

Won by: Matins (GB) at 1/33F

What we said: Matins is clearly the class act here off his debut win at this course and trip on quick ground, with the yard in solid current form, but a price of 1/50 leaves no room for profit even if he wins nine times out of ten; Emperor Aurelius looks there simply to make up the numbers with a stable in poor recent order and no worthwhile form to lean on. In a two-horse field this shapes as an exhibition gallop for Matins rather than a competitive betting proposition.

14:38 British Stallion Studs EBF Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

We named the winner

Class 3 · 7f3y · Good To Firm · 7 ran

We passed. Likely winner: Rock Montreal (4/5)

Won by: Rock Montreal (IRE) at 2/5F · then Mino (GB)

What we said: Rock Montreal is unraced and already trades at 4/5, so the market has priced in nearly all of the goodwill from the Varian/Dawson book before I've seen him race, leaving no room for me to disagree with conviction; meanwhile the horses with actual course-and-distance form — Majestic Jude, Stormy Winter, On Target, Mino — all finished mid-pack last time and none stands out enough to back into a short-priced newcomer. Yarmouth has been a weak track for these calls in the book, and a seven-runner maiden with an unexposed favourite is exactly the type where an honest edge is hard to claim.

15:13 Handicap Stakes

Class 5 · 1m3f104y · Good To Firm · 4 ran

Not a bet. The horse we made most likely: Arcturus Flame (15/8)

Won by: Zachary Hickes (GB) at 6/4

What we said: Fastest form figures in the field (PR85/SR78) and a sire whose stock is proven best on fast/good ground, which lines up perfectly with today's firm surface. The first-time cheekpieces add a touch of uncertainty but also intent from a yard clearly looking to sharpen a horse capable of better than its last, flat 5th-of-10 effort suggests.

15:48 QuinnBet Classified Stakes

Did not win

Class 6 · 1m0f3y · Good To Firm · 10 ran

Not a bet. The horse we made most likely: Letsbeatsepsis (6/4)

Won by: Heer's Sadie (GB) at 17/2 · then Castlekeely (IRE), Nicely Curved (USA)

What we said: Comes into this off a wide-margin win last time at 10f on good to firm, drops back in trip today but the yard's claiming rider takes 7lb off and the gelding is clearly working through the grades with recent placed efforts in this grade too. The step down in class to this weak assortment, allied to solid recent form figures (-30431), makes him the swing factor in an otherwise ordinary field.

16:25 QuinnBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap Stakes

Did not win

Class 5 · 0m5f42y · Good To Firm · 8 ran

We passed. Likely winner: Rumble Ruby (7/4)

Won by: Always Perfect (IRE) at 13/8F · then Creative Queen (USA)

What we said: Rumble Ruby and Always Perfect share top billing at 7/4 with almost identical recent form lines, and Sunlit Sea arrives on a genuine upward curve (form -84112) with a sire that likes this fast ground, so there's no single horse that clearly separates itself from the pack at the price on offer. Rumble Ruby's market move is noted but a two-day turnaround adds a fitness question mark rather than an answer, and with three legitimate claims in an eight-runner field the price on any of them doesn't compensate for the uncertainty.

17:00 Danny Frost - Medlock Electrical Distributors Classified Stakes

Placed

Class 6 · 0m6f3y · Good To Firm · 9 ran

Not a bet. The horse we made most likely: My Mate Mackley (3/1)

Won by: Thanks Dad (GB) at 12/1 · then Valadero (IRE), My Mate Mackley (GB)

What we said: Won last time out at 6f on standard and now steps back onto quicker ground with a form line reading 322421, a genuine upward trajectory with two wins and three places from the last six starts. The 7lb claim trims the weight further and the pace tag shows he tracks rather than holds up, which suits a track where there's no strong pressure on the front end today. He backed up just a day after that last run, which shows a yard happy to keep him ticking over while sharp, though it's worth flagging as the one obvious risk.
